If You are Denying Mobile, You are So “2000 and Late”

Don’t get the reference above? Ask your kids. While you’re at it, observe how they’ve adopted technology. Whether or not you choose to embrace it, your business travelers are, and right now there is nothing hotter than mobile technology. BTN tells us that 92% of business travelers have a smartphone and most of them are looking for apps (applications, not pigs ‘n blankets or bruschetta) that simplify their lives. Just like McDonald’s, Apple’s served up more than a billion apps.

In less than 2 years, OpenTable users have booked more than 2 million dining reservations straight from their mobile phones. Facebook has 100 million mobile users, and its mobile growth now exceeds that of its desktop version. We don’t make this up. About a year ago, Wall Street Journal reporter, Nick Wingfield, explained that, “many travelers are now using smart phones the way they once used laptops.”  He backed this up with In-Stat data in which 52% of travelers said they could ultimately envision a smartphone completely replacing their computer.

We’re not here to argue whether or not people will be editing Excel spreadsheets from their phones. Then again, would you have believed us a year ago if we predicted that 100 million people would be poking each other and desperately awaiting Snooki updates (isn’t that what people do on Facebook), all while on the go? The key takeaway here is that smartphones are now as powerful as computers and they are rapidly becoming the device of choice.

What this means to the travel industry

Mobile technology is here now, and users are embracing it faster than ever before. In many cases, companies are already arming employees with a mobile device, and 49% of the time the employer covers the cell phone bill (Forrester).   Companies are also making them travel. Doesn’t it make sense for you to arm yourself and your travelers with the mobile technology that will make life easier while on a trip? According to Forrester, it’s time “to embrace the large and growing installed base of smartphones that enterprise users are taking to work with them every day.” If you don’t provide the tools they need and want, they’re certain to go rogue on you.

    As for mobile – Oh yes. It’s big in the developed world…Did you know in Japan some kids didn’t even know they could email from a desktop computer?? They grew up on Mobile!

    Wait till wireless broadband and apps hit the developing world where cell towers leapfrogged the delayed install of hard lines. This was the case in Africa, Latin America and many other regions of the world that went from no phone communication infrastructure to cell phones and mobile money in less that 5 years! I bet something akin to Moores Law will be pronounced to gauge the rapid growth and traction of global commerce based on mobile.
